Letters of Reprimand

Military Law Assistance from Hinesville & Richmond Hill Attorneys

If you have received a letter of reprimand as a military member, you will want to take immediate action to protect your military career. Letters of reprimand (LOR) are also often called memorandum of reprimand or GOMORS. The purpose of these letters is to draw attention to the soldier's poor duty performance or misconduct. The reprimand must state the reason why it is being issued and that it is imposed for administrative, rather than punitive, purposes.

Letters of reprimand are written by general officers and typically begin by stating the alleged violation of the Uniform Code of Military Justice taken by the receiving officer. You should respond to a letter of reprimand to avoid having it filed. The rebuttal is your opportunity to tell your side of the story. Once the rebuttal is submitted, the commander will make a final determination as to whether and how to have it filed. The particular location of where your letter of reprimand is filed is critical to the impact it has on your career. Your reprimand can be filed in an officer's official military personnel file (OMPF) or performance fiche (P-fiche). To avoid this situation, we can take action to have it withdrawn, dismissed, or filed in your military personnel records jacket (MPRJ).
